Samuel Tarly sat at his desk, his head pounding. He’d done almost nothing but drink since returning from Horn Hill a week ago, starting when he’d delivered the news to Ser Martyn that Addam had been killed at Pyke. The old grizzled castlellan had broken down and wept at the news of his son’s death, but had also swiftly returned to his duties running Horn Hill. Samuel was slower to recover, spending nearly a fortnight in a drunken stupor and when he returned to his duties, a hangover pervaded for three full days before he felt well again.
He was in his solar looking at the treasury accounts since he had departed. Horn Hill’s finances had been depleted by war, as well as by the costs of rebuilding two castles, but the Tarly lands had been untouched by war and the harvest was a strong one, although the Reach was somewhat lacking in strong hands to reap it. Samuel flipped through the meticulous records kept by Pylos, confident that the maester had done his job well. Pylos could have been the Archmaester of the School of Gold at the Citadel, but had declined the job to remain at Horn Hill.
Samuel called the old man into his solar, and Pylos arrived with a warm cloth and a pitcher of lemon water. “Thank you Pylos, I swear you’re a mind-reader,” he said when he noticed the items. Pylos sat down in one of the other chairs around Samuel’s desk and the pair went through the financial records of the castle in great detail. He began to make details for a large celebration, which would accompany his wedding to the Dornish girl, something Blackmont.
He had originally thought that the Hand had sentenced him to an informal execution, and was convinced that one day he would wake up with a knife between his ribs or poison in his breakfast. Samuel remained wary; since he had razed the girl’s home and killed most of her family, but he had yet to meet the woman he was to wed so decided not to pass judgment until then.
He was glad to learn Horn Hill could afford a wedding, and he resolved to make it an extravagant one, where at least, he could have a good time. A slight smirk crept onto his face, when the thought occurred to him that the heir to Horn Hill would be half Dornish and half Summer Islander. Samuel outlined to Pylos what he wanted at the wedding, and the maester frowned more than once, remarking to the lord of the strain that it would put on Horn Hill’s treasury but Samuel ignored the maester’s concerns, well convinced that he could afford such an event.
