Lord Joshua Arryn had experienced true joy when Jeyne Caron had announced she would accept him as her betrothed during his last night in Nightsong. IT had felt as if a warm breeze of euphoria washed over him at that moment, and it stayed with him all the way on their trip back to the Vale. Jeyne accompanied him and his party, as they spent nearly all their time together, as he had introduced her to Aegis.
Aegis, naturally, liked her right away, and Joshua knew. The trip back to the Mountains of the Moon were bright, sunny and pleasant, as they ran into no trouble, though dark clouds were seen ahead, though they never suffered them as of yet.
Joshua had shown Jeyne the Moon Gate and the Eyrie upon arriving back in the Vale. He showed her the wonders, and the secrets of the beauty, giving her sights many women would never dream of in their lives, as they watched a sunset from a hidden cliff Joshua visited frequently, having found it not long ago, with the help of Aegis.
Joshua fell in love swiftly with Jeyne, as the two saw the world in a way neither thought possible, laughing and being completely contempt, just being in each other's presence.
Then came the time when news of the Lord Hand's death reached them and their love was put to a halt for the name of duty. All events seemed to pass by Joshua, as gust of wind brought them past him. He had held a Council of Lords and announced important and discussed matters, setting the base of something new. He was in a daze, between his duties, and his training, it seemed he was always on the run, rarely having time for anything else. He only felt relaxed when with Jeyne or with Aegis.
It was weeks after the Council and the discovery of the Hand's dead body when Joshua and Pryor met in the yard for the first time. He had barely talked with the man before, only for simple matters of planning and discussion, though he knew little of the personal life of the man; but Joshua preferred it that way.
Joshua thought of this as a learning experience, rather than a sparring match. He came at the legendary fighter with all he had, quickly letting Aegis and himself slip together, fighting as one. Pushing the attack, Joshua's fighting became a dance, though it was a short dance, for it was put to an end with a quick counter by Pryor.
"You slip into a rhythm. Though you enter your own element, which is good, do not let yourself become predictable. Keep your movements relative to your opponent's, and never commit. Again," he said, ushering Joshua forwards.
Joshua said nothing, though he listened intently. He came this time more warily, as he let himself and Aegis become one again. He had at least that advantage over the man. As they came together again, Joshua heeded the man's words, playing the defense before quickly countering and pushing the offensive. Joshua was willing to take a battering, and welcomed the bruises. Pryor was both quick, strong and aggressive, though knew Joshua's moves as he did them. He was indeed a dangerous man to cross, though Joshua would someday learn to overcome him, as he did Yohn Arryn.
It was their seventh time at each other before Joshua landed his blade on Pryor, though the strike was soft and glancing; but he hit him. All the bouts beforehand, Joshua had grown more and more aggressive after the second bout, lasting longer and longer, before the inevitable defeat at the hands of the famous fighter.
He had swiftly side stepped a counter by Vanidan, bringing his sword down in an arc, which Pryor attempted to spin out of the way of, and had almost done so, except for a quick twist of the wrist by Joshua, making his arc's range widen a small fraction, landing a glancing blow on the side of Vanidan's shoulder.
The fight only lasted a moment longer, as they traded a few more blows, before Pryor put Joshua to the dirt with an elbow to the chin. Whipping the blood from his mouth, Joshua rose, ready for another go. "That was an improvement, though we are not done," Pryor explained.
Joshua only landed two more hits on Vanidan Pryor that day, in seven more rounds, lasting until dusk. Exhausted and sweaty, ready to collapse, Joshua staggered back up from the last go. He had lasted longer than he ever hoped to that day, for he made Vanidan pant himself, which was a true accomplishment. "Good. Ser Rodrick Hunter will see you now, you two have business together. I will see you on the morrow, at the same time, young one," Ser Ser Vanidan Pryor explained, turning and leaving with a curt nod. Exhausted and bruised, Joshua headed to see what awaited him in Hunter's Quarters.
